The Knight Riders, Knights of the Ku Klux Klan has obtained a permit to hold a rally Feb. 20 at a ball field in Schlatterville, a community 15 miles west of Nahunta where the group had been rebuffed.
The Knight Riders will hold the rally from noon until 2 p.m. to raise public awareness on sex offenders, illegal immigrants and prayer in school, organizers said.
Brantley County Manager Parrish Barwick approved the group’s application for a permit after reviewing it to ensure it complied with state law and county ordinances, County Commissoin Chairman Ronald Ham said today.
Ham said he talked with Imperial Wizard Jeff Jones, who assured him the group is law-abiding.
“He explained that nobody can have a criminal record and belong to their organization. He said nobody would have any weapons, and that they are here for a peaceful demonstration,” Ham said.
Jones told Ham the Knight Riders will not obscure their faces with masks or hoods.
By law, it is illegal for people to wear masks or hoods to conceal their faces and identity on public property in Georgia.
The Georgia State Patrol has said it will be available if needed to assist the Brantley County Sheriff’s Office in providing security for the rally.
“The sheriff has assured me that we will have sufficient security in place so that if anybody gets out of line, they will see the inside of our new jail,” Ham said.
The Knight Riders previously requested a permit to hold the rally at the Nahunta City Hall parking lot. On Friday, city attorney James Kelly Brooks informed Wolf that the city was denying the group’s request because the parking lot has not been a public forum.
Brooks said Nahunta had no alternative meeting place to offer.
The County Commission had already denied the group’s request to use the courthouse grounds for a rally. The commission rejected the request because roof construction and other renovations at the courthouse would make the grounds unusable, Ham has said.
The Schlatterville facility was among three alternative locations the county offered.
